The Self Is Not Where You Think It Is
In 2023, researchers at MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory published a finding that deserves more attention than it received outside neuroscience. Recording from electrode arrays across four regions of the cortex in two macaque monkeys, from primary sensory areas through to the prefrontal cortex, they measured what happens when propofol anaesthesia is administered.
